Details

The HUD-VASH Program was originally started as a nationwide program in 1992. The program is a partnership between the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide subsidized housing vouchers for eligible, homeless veterans. HUD-VASH is designed to help veterans who are living with a disability, mental illness, addiction, or other co-occurring disorders, and the families of these veterans to locate and maintain stable and permanent housing. HUD-VASH also provides supportive services to the veterans to prevent them from returning to homelessness.

Eligibility: The veteran must be experiencing homelessness and be eligible for VA health care. Veterans who meet the federal definition for being chronically homeless, will have a preference. HUD-VASH is a low-income housing program so the participant must have income below the established HUD poverty threshold for the desired location county. It is determined that the veteran requires and would benefit from Case Management. Veterans required to register on any Lifetime Sex Offender Registry, or who exceed the established income threshold are NOT ELIGIBLE for the program.

Fees: Veterans are responsible to pay a portion of the monthly rent directly to the landlord. This is equal to roughly 30-40% of their gross monthly income with a minimum of $50 per month. The housing authority subsidies the remaining portion of the rent. Security Deposits and application fees, along with any other up-front fees, are the responsibility of the veteran however some community resources are often available to assist with these expenses.
